The style of spoken English varies greatly from one setting to another. In the academic environment, the tone and style of speech you use to communicate with fellow students will differ from how you address professors. Expectations regarding participation levels may also be different.
This course is designed to teach undergraduate students the basic skills they need to effectively participate in tutorials, lectures and study groups. You will learn how to interact with confidence in a variety of academic settings: how to ask and respond to questions; request clarification; lead and summarize discussions; and debate academic subjects. You will discover important tools and techniques for improving pronunciation, and you will learn, through instructor, peer and self-feedback, how to analyze your communication skills. Expect up to three hours of homework each week.
