Course Description

Learn how to create an authentic world that balances historical fact and imagination in this five-day workshop led by Christine Estima. Part of the U of T Summer Writing School, it will introduce you to challenges and opportunities particular to the genre - and to a community of like-minded writers. You'll explore the use of historical language, the art of fictionalizing people who actually existed and ways to research events that predate your birth.

Summer Writing School courses are applicable to the Certificate in Creative Writing.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply these techniques to your own work.

Submission Requirements: The submission should be a manuscript between 2500 and 5000 words, standard font, ideally the first chapter or another writing sample—along with a brief explanation of your work. Submissions will be posted on Quercus for your instructor and classmates to view, and distributed before the course begins. Please read all submissions and be prepared to workshop before the first day of class. Your instructor will post required readings on Quercus a week before.
