Course Description

Creative non-fiction tells factual stories in a literary style. It draws on memory, imagination, research and analysis. This introductory course will cover the basics of literary technique in order to turn a historical event or a fact into a literary text. Explore what you want and need to say, and find an attractive, efficient, and provocative way to express it. The course will offer various readings in Spanish as an example of the genre and its styles.

La llamada escritura de “no ficción” narra hechos reales (de ahí el término “factual) en un estilo literario. Esta literatura se nutre de recuerdos, la imaginación, la investigación y el análisis. En este curso introductorio se cubrirán las técnicas literarias básicas para convertir un hecho real definido en un texto literario. Explore lo que desee y necesite narrar, y encuentre la manera más atractiva, provocadora y eficaz para hacerlo. El curso además brindará lecturas apropiadas que sirvan como ejemplo del trabajo en este género en el idioma español.

Learning Outcomes

• To understand the genre of creative or narrative non-fiction and how it has expressed itself in the Spanish language.
• Identify and develop storytelling techniques to use in your work.
• Emerge with a few short pieces of creative non-fiction written in Spanish.

Objetivos del curso:

• Comprender el género de la “no ficción” (diferencias entre testimonio, autobiografía, etc).
• Usar técnicas de narración literaria para desarrollar el trabajo de clase.
• Producir algunos textos cortos en este género, o sentar las bases para una narración más larga.
