1664 - Creative Writing: Introduction
Course Description
If you're just getting started as a writer and haven't yet decided on a literary direction, this course gives you the opportunity to try a number of different genres. Half of each class is devoted to a workshop where constructive and supportive feedback will help you focus, polish and deepen your writing. The other half is devoted to discussing an aspect of literary technique such as character, setting, plot, point of view, structure or revision.

Elizabeth Ruth is the author of the novels, Semi-Detached, Matadora, Smoke, and Ten Good Seconds of Silence. Her poetry collection is titled, This Report Is Strictly Confidential. Elizabeth’s work has been recognized by the Writers’ Trust of Canada Fiction Prize, the City of Toronto Book Award, the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, and One Book One Community. CBC named her “One of the Ten Canadian Women Writers You Must Read.” She is also the author of a plain language novella for adult literacy learners entitled, Love You to Death and editor of the anthology, Bent on Writing: contemporary queer tales. Kristyn Dunnion (she/her) writes long and short fiction. She earned an MA from the University of Guelph and an Honours BA from McGill University. Her several books include "Stoop City" (Biblioasis), winner of the 2021 ReLit Award for fiction; "Tarry This Night," shortlisted for 2018 ReLit Award for novels and the Sunburst Award; and "The Dirt Chronicles" (Arsenal Pulp Press), a Lambda Literary finalist. Dunnion's work has been celebrated by the Acker Award, Metcalf-Rooke Award, and Machigonne Fiction Prize. She is one of six writers featured in Canadian tell-all "Off the Record," edited by John Metcalf (Biblioasis), and the self-anointed Can Lit Doula. Literary specialities include magic realism, speculative fiction, esoteric and occult themed writing, cli-fi, feminist/queer horror and stories of resistance and revolution.
