1691 - Creative Non-Fiction: Introduction
Course Description
Creative non-fiction tells factual stories in a literary style. If this is the stream you're entering in pursuit of a Certificate in Creative Writing, this course is the first step. You'll cover the basics of literary technique and emerge with completed work samples. Explore what you want and need to say, and find an immediate, noteworthy, compelling and provocative way to express it. The course will also introduce you to a community of writers working in your genre.

- Use storytelling techniques in your work.
- Produce short pieces of creative non-fiction.

Karen van Kampen is an author, journalist and business consultant. Her book The Brain Never Sleeps explores the science of dreaming and will be published by Simon & Schuster Canada in 2026. She is the author of The Golden Cell, which investigates innovations and challenges in regenerative medicine. She has worked as a writer and editor at several magazines and newspapers. Her writing has appeared in various publications including The Globe and Mail and National Post. Karen has a Master of Health Administration from the University of Toronto, a BA in English and a Bachelor of Journalism. She has a creative writing graduate certificate from The Humber School for Writers and fiction and script writing certificates from The University of Edinburgh.
