Course Description

A song is born! Need to climb out of your songwriting rut? Get your creative impulses moving and explore strategies to bring your songs to life. Generate new song ideas each week and workshop them in a respectful group environment. Topics addressed will include borrowed chords and lyrics, phrasing, generating lyrics, improving your melody, finishing a song, habits for prolific writing, and much more! Suitable for all musical levels. Award winning and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Michelle McAdorey’s passion for the tools of the craft will leave you with fresh inspiration and help you find the unique power of your voice.

Learning Outcomes

Write your own song(s) and song fragments 

Understand and explore songwriting forms

Create and generate original lyrical ideas and melodies and apply them to song creation

Analyze lyric concepts and song title development 

Learn skills to help overcome writer’s block  and cultivate tools to help support a regular songwriting practice

Notes

No formal training or experience is required.  However, some knowledge of music and/or creative writing is helpful. 

For the purposes of this class, a song must have vocals with lyrics and some form of accompaniment. Students need not be experienced singers/musicians but must be willing to record themselves vocalizing(singing, rapping, speaking) with an accompanying instrument.
