Course Description
Learn the fundamentals of writing for television. You'll work individually and in groups to explore the essential building blocks of the one-hour dramatic television series, structure, story and character, as you develop your own series concept. You'll learn how to pitch a plot synopsis with a strong emotional hook, construct a story, develop a beat sheet that highlights major dramatic moments, and write compelling scenes for the small screen.

- See what's involved in moving an idea through the industry into production.
- Create a logline - a plot synopsis and emotional hook - as well as a beat sheet and an outline.

After decades as a top commissioner of scripted content at Canadian broadcasters, Tara transitioned into independent producing with her first show, Hey Lady! – a short-form comedy series directed by Adriana Maggs and Sarah Polley which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Festival, and on CBC Gem. Her recent comedy series Nesting, premiered on Crave in December of 2023. Select shows Tara backed as a programmer and commissioner of content include the series Slings & Arrows (for Showcase) New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum’s “favorite show of all time”, History Channel’s top-rated series The Kennedys (for which Tara received an Emmy nom) and the Global series Rookie Blue. At CBC, Tara oversaw all comedy, drama, kids and digital series scripted content including Schitt’s Creek, Anne with an E, Kim’s Convenience and Alias Grace.
